There be 是英語中常用句型，意思是“有”，表示“人或事物的存在”。There在此結(jié)構(gòu)中是引導(dǎo)詞，已經(jīng)沒有副詞“那里”的含義。There be 后面的名詞是句子的主語，屬倒裝結(jié)構(gòu)。要表達(dá)“某個地方或某個時間存在什么事物或人”的時候常用“There be + 名詞+地點(diǎn)（時間）”這一句型。There be 中的be有時可以是lie, stand, used to be, seem to be, appear to be 等。there be句式通常譯為“有”，當(dāng)然也要注意靈活處理，不必拘泥“有”字句，例如There have been great changes in China over the past three decades. 譯文：中國過去30年發(fā)生了巨大變化。

本書討論的it句式指的是英語中常見的it做主語的句子，而且經(jīng)常討論的是it起形式上的主語作用的句子。通?？梢允遣欢ㄊ?、動名詞或從句做真實(shí)主語。It句型的基本結(jié)構(gòu)常為：it is + 名詞/形容詞/過去分詞……。很多it句型已經(jīng)具有了“固定搭配”，也產(chǎn)生了相對固定的翻譯。例如：It is said/reported/weighted/hoped that...據(jù)說/據(jù)報(bào)道/權(quán)衡了/希望……；It is first intended that...最初就有這樣的想法……；It may be said without fear of exaggeration that...可以毫不夸張地說……；It will be seen from this that...由此可見……；It is believed/asserted/taken/noted that... 有人相信/宣稱/認(rèn)為/指出……；It is sometimes asked that...人們有時會問……。當(dāng)然這僅是一些特殊的句式，最為常用的手段仍然是實(shí)用的“是”字句，將先行主語及謂語譯出，以“是”連接后面的真實(shí)主語。

例1. There is a general perception that the legal environment is arbitrary which makes planning and enforcement on a range of issues difficult to impossible particularly if you become too profitable or come into conflict with government authorities.

譯文1：毫無疑問貴公司在社會責(zé)任方面做得很負(fù)責(zé)，值得我們的尊敬。并且有另外一個優(yōu)點(diǎn)-你們將員工放在第一位。讓員工當(dāng)家做主，滿足他們的需要。

例3. There is a nationwide school program designed to increase students’ sensitivity to the population’s multicultural backgrounds. Educational materials developed under federal initiatives are available to schools to meet such needs.
