(一）引導(dǎo)名詞性從句

that可以引導(dǎo)各種名詞性從句，如主語(yǔ)從句，表語(yǔ)從句、賓語(yǔ)從句和同位語(yǔ)從句。此時(shí)的that在句中只起連接作用，不擔(dān)任任何句子成分，也無(wú)詞匯意義，所以翻譯時(shí)減去不譯。試看以下各例。

1. That the tubes overheat easily may be the cause of the trouble.

（二）引導(dǎo)狀語(yǔ)從句

that?？蓡为?dú)地或與其它詞連用來(lái)引導(dǎo)表示目的、原因、結(jié)果或條件的狀語(yǔ)從句。此時(shí)的that也只起連接作用，無(wú)詞匯意義。不過(guò)翻譯時(shí)應(yīng)視具體情況，譯出適當(dāng)?shù)臓钫Z(yǔ)意味，試看以下各例。

5. Cables are usually laid underground that their life may be prolonged.
