如果查閱一本英漢或漢英的詞典，我們會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)許多詞的意思并不是一對一的關(guān)系。英語一詞多義、一義多詞是十分普遍的。因而在商務(wù)信函漢譯英時(shí)， 我們可以充分利用英語詞匯這一特點(diǎn)，靈活選擇英語詞語來表達(dá)漢語意義。

1. 一詞多義

例1 現(xiàn)另郵給你方最新的價(jià)目單和剪樣。

譯文：We are now airmailing you under separate cover our latest price list and cutting sample.

例2 望你方能早日裝運(yùn)我方第2213號定單項(xiàng)下的10箱茶葉為宜。

譯文：Please ship the ten chests of tea covered by our Order No. 2213 at an early date.

例3 3356號訂單下的貨物已投保了一切險(xiǎn)。

譯文：The goods under our Order No. 3356 are covered against All Risks.

例4 秋季展覽會(huì)展出面積為5,000平方米。

譯文：This autumn exhibition covers an area of 5000 square meters.

例5 三天后，開證行將在通知書上告知受益人有關(guān)信用證的開證情況。

譯文：The initiating bank will inform the beneficiary of the relative L/C in the covering letter three days later. 

以上五個(gè)句子中翻譯成英文時(shí)都用“cover”一詞，但每一個(gè)句子中“cover”的意思相差甚遠(yuǎn)。

2. —義多詞

在商務(wù)信函中，價(jià)格是十分重要的因素，沒有價(jià)格就沒有貿(mào)易。買賣雙方交易時(shí)，買方當(dāng)然希望賣方能報(bào)商品的最低價(jià)，以獲取最高的利潤。中文中的“最低價(jià)”在英文中有許多的表達(dá)方法，請看下面的例子：

例6 我們的報(bào)價(jià)已是最低價(jià)，折扣不能再給了。

譯文: As we have quoted you our rock-bottom price, we can't grant you an discount.

例7 請報(bào)永久牌自行車最低價(jià)。

譯文：Please make us your lowest quotation for "Forever" brand bicycle.

例8 你們將會(huì)看出我們這批貨物的價(jià)格是最低的。

譯文：You will find our prices for these goods on tbe lowest side.

例9 如果有興趣與我方做生意，請報(bào)最低價(jià)。

譯文：If you feel interested in doing business with us, please quote us your best price.

例10 我們已接最低價(jià)向你方報(bào)盤。

譯文：We have made you an offer at the most competitive price.

例11如果你方向我方報(bào)最低價(jià)，我方將考慮向你方大量訂購。

譯文：Should you offer us at the most favorable price, we'll consider placing large orders with you.

上述6句中文中都有“最低價(jià)”一詞，但在翻譯具體句子時(shí)，應(yīng)靈活處理 cheapest 一詞，cheapest雖也有“最低價(jià)”的意思，但一般不用于商務(wù)信函的報(bào)價(jià)，因?yàn)榇嗽~常含有貶義，表示“廉價(jià)質(zhì)低”的意思，應(yīng)引起注意。
